The role, the tools, the pay, and whether to hire one or outsource the build.
A GTM engineer builds and maintains the automated systems behind a company's go-to-market motion: the data enrichment, signal triggers, lead routing, CRM hygiene and AI agents that tell sales and account teams who to contact, when, and with what context.
The title is new and companies use it loosely. In practice the work falls into a few buckets:
The role sits between sales operations, revenue operations and software engineering. It rewards people who can think like a seller and build like an engineer.
A typical stack includes a data orchestration tool such as Clay, a CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce, a sequencing tool, workflow automation, and increasingly an AI-native CRM or agent layer such as Day AI. Our guide to Clay vs Apollo explains how two of the most common tools differ.
Published figures vary because the title is inconsistent and the sources use different methods. Treat all of them as vendor-published estimates rather than a survey:
Most of these figures cover base salary only. Cargo sells GTM tooling and the others have their own commercial interests, so check current postings for the roles you are actually hiring.
A full-time GTM engineer makes sense when you have a steady stream of new systems to build and enough ongoing work to keep the person busy. It is harder to justify when you need one system built well, once, and then run quietly.
Best when GTM systems are a permanent priority, you can manage the person day to day, and you can pay a senior market salary.
Best when you need a defined system (a Clay build, a CRM cleanup, a set of agents) delivered, documented and handed over so your team can run it.
We are a Clay Solutions Partner and a Day AI implementation partner. Our engagements are fixed scope: we scope the problem on a 20-minute call, send a one-page proposal, build in your own tools over typically two to four weeks, and hand over with documentation. If you later want ongoing support there is an optional monthly retainer. See the Clay consultant page or GTM Agents for what we build.
A 20-minute call is enough to scope the problem and tell you whether we are the right fit.
